Farewell to President Vassiliou
OPEK Association for Social Reform expresses its deep sorrow at the passing of the former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou.
The deceased was an iconic figure in the contemporaneous political history of Cyprus and one of the most consistent advocates of the need to modernize the state, society, and the economy. During his presidential term (1988–1993), he resolutely promoted reforms aimed at institutional upgrading of the country, transparency, efficiency in public administration, and modernization of economic policy.
His strategic choice for Cyprus’ European course was of particular importance, as it contributed decisively to laying the foundations for our country’s accession to the EU. At the same time, he showed political courage and realism on the Cyprus issue, seeking a solution through dialogue, cooperation, and reconciliation, with a firm orientation towards international law and European values.
George Vassiliou remained an active citizen, intellectual, and proponent of progress, rationality, and social responsibility until the end of his life. His work and legacy are a point of reference for those who believe in an open, democratic, and modern society.
OPEK expresses its sincere condolences to his family and loved ones and pays its respects to a politician who associated his name with reform, European orientation, and progress.
